Improved Design Increases Productivity of Compost Turning Machine
In agriculture, windrow composting is the production of compost by piling organic matter or
biodegradable waste, such as animal manure and crop residues, in long rows (windrows). These
rows are generally turned to improve porosity and oxygen content, mix in or remove moisture, and
redistribute cooler and hotter portions of the pile. A manufacturer of specialized equipment was
asked to design and build a compost turning machine capable of producing 14’ wide by 6’ high
windrows and allow for thorough aeration of compost materials, resulting in better microbe
preservation and shorter composting cycle times. Their prototype machine was a giant track-driven
piece of equipment designed to take in the windrow of compost using a 140” wide rotor, turn it
onto a conveyor and move it into the machine where air and/or water is injected. Industrial-scale
“open-loop” technology was used in this design which required a huge 300-gallon oil tank.
After this prototype was built, Airline’s application engineer was brought in and showed the
manufacturer how to use mobile hydraulic technology to yield significant weight and space
savings. A hydrostatic “closed-loop” system was implemented to run the rotor and conveyor and
allowed the oil reservoir to be downsized to 180 gallons. A HYDAC Combi-Cooler was added to
handle heat generation, and other components were properly sized and matched to reduce huge
pressure drops that were problematic on the prototype machine. This new design resulted in the
machine’s capability to handle 25% more compost in the same amount of space.
