HYDAC Dehydrator Solves Water Problem in Hydroelectric Plant
Airline's Service Department used a HYDAC FAM VAC dehydrator to remove large amounts of water in the hydraulic system of a hydroelectric plant, located along a river in New England, where falling water is converted into energy. The
water falls into a turbine making it spin, turning it and its shaft at a high rate of speed. The shaft goes through a series of large magnets, creating electricity which is sold throughout the area. There are two actuators that
are closed-loop controlled that allow a certain amount of water through to the turbine, depending if the river water is high or low. There is a large bearing that supports the shaft of the turbine that requires lubrication from
the hydraulic system. On one side of the bearing there is water which is only prevented from coming into the system by a large seal. On the other side is the bearing and hydraulic oil. In this case, the seal had failed and could
not keep the water out, so the customer had water in his oil. They had changed this seal many, times and nothing seemed to work. Airline proposed that the customer use our HYDAC FAM VAC dehydrator to remove the water, but first
the hydraulic system and manifold had to be cleaned so that new oil could be used before putting the HYDAC unit on line. Airline service personnel worked in harsh conditions to remove the contaminated oil and cleaned the system
and manifold thoroughly. Then the HYDAC unit was put online and the hydraulic system was started with absolutely no problems. The customer was very pleased with the outcome.
